Percy Vesperman, 85, died Friday, November 13, 2015, at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, with Pastor Donna Hoffman officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be made in his name to the Good Samaritan Society or FHN Hospice in Percy’s memory.
Percy was born September 10, 1930, in Grant County, Wisconsin to John and Velma (Hayes) Vesperman. Percy graduated from Fennimore, Wisconsin, High School. He married Jessie Hatfield on December 30, 1953. She preceded him in death on August 23, 2011.
After graduation, Percy moved to Savanna where he worked for the Savanna Ordinance Depot for 3 years. He worked for Interstate Power Company for 38 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Savanna Moose Lodge 1095, the Mt. Carroll Lions Club for over 50 years and the Mt. Carroll Bowling Association where he served as President for 38 years. He had served on the Mt. Carroll School Board and was a former volunteer fireman with the Mt. Carroll Fire Department. He was an avid local high school sports booster for many years and active in many, many community projects. Percy enjoyed golfing and watching the Atlanta Braves and especially his beloved Green Bay Packers. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the time spent with his friends at the coffee shop.
Percy is survived by one daughter, Pamela Howard of Sterling, Illinois; one son, James Vesperman of Chipley, Florida; three grandsons, Ryan (Callista) Derrer of Sterling, Eric (Sara) Derrer of Mt. Carroll and Derik Vesperman of Orlando, Florida; one step-granddaughter, Kimberly (Tracey) Webb of Moline, Illinois; four grandchildren, Mylanah, Landen and Ellah Derrer of Sterling and Emilee Derrer of Mt. Carroll; five step-grandchildren, Bailey and Chloe Webb of Moline and Justin, Natalie and Madalyn Limesand of Mt. Carroll; two brothers, Archie Vesperman of Lancaster, Wisconsin and Lyle Vesperman of Boscobel, Wisconsin; three sisters, Ruth (Cletus) Sisley of Lancaster, Hazel Straka of Montfort, Wisconsin and Stella Blair of Fremont, Wisconsin; and many, many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his wife, Percy was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clarion Vesperman, and three sisters, Elsie Bryant, Bernice Moran and Marion Welch.
