Pearl Urwin

September 26, 1932 — December 26, 2013

Pearl Marie (Paasch) Urwin watched over her family with love, and taught by example by the way she lived her life. At the wise age of 81, Pearl passed into the arms of God on Thursday, December 26, 2013 from her home in Preston, Iowa.
Pearl Marie was born September 26, 1932 in Charlotte, Iowa, the daughter of John William and Evalina Alvina (Hendricks) Paasch. She attended school in Charlotte. At the age of 15, she started her working career as a waitress for the Nickel Nook Restaurant in Maquoketa, located where the current courthouse sits. On January 12, 1951, Pearl married John Henry Urwin at the Jackson County Courthouse. They were married by Clifford Miller, Justice of the Peace. Pearl and John brought eight children into this world. John passed away June 30, 1985. They enjoyed thirty-four years of marriage.

In 1980, at the age of 48, Pearl earned her GED. She later went on to receive several computer classes from Scott Community College in the 1990s. All through life, Pearl believed in continuing her education to keep up with the times. Years ago she also worked at the "Spat" Restaurant on the north end of Maquoketa, and the Truck Stop on "old 61." She cooked at Crestridge Nursing Facilty, Maquoketa and the Cottage Inn in Clinton. Pearl spent several years at the General Electric Plant in Morrison and the Erie Locker plant. In later years she worked for the Department of Human Services, Operation New View through AARP. Pearl happily retired in 2003.
Pearl will be dearly missed by five sons, Gerald (Cheryl) Urwin of Maquoketa, David (Doris) Urwin of Bellevue, Nebraska, John (Lynn) Urwin of Grand Mound, Dail (Sheila) Urwin of Maquoketa and Kenneth Urwin of Maquoketa; two daughters, Pamela (Arnie) Brondyke of Preston and Patsy (Loras) Stillmunkes of Preston; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren and two on-the-way; one sister, Vera Langschwanger of Ocala, Florida; a sister-in-law, Helen Paasch and several nieces and nephews. Pearl is preceded in death by her husband, John; a son, Larry; two brothers, Raymond and Roger; two sisters, Blanche McCallister and Delores "Buzzy" Lentz; and both parents.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., followed by a service at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 3, 2014 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. Her wish is to donate her body to science, as did her husband.
