Pauline “Polly” Smith, age 92, of Lanark, Illinois, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan, Mount Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanark with Pastor Philip Mathai officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2013 at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Burial will take place in Lanark Cemetery, Lanark. Memorials may be given to Carroll County Good Samaritan or the Trinity Lutheran Church in Polly’s memory.
Polly was born on March 9, 1921, the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Eberle) Schoenhaar in Savanna, Illinois. She graduated from Savanna High School and then attended Brown’s Business School in Peoria, where she earned her degree in Accounting. She married Francis E. “Smitty” Smith on October 3, 1948 in Savanna. Smitty died in Mount Carroll in 1982.
After graduation, Polly moved to Washington D.C. and worked at the Pentagon, which at the time was under construction and only had three sides. In 1942, Polly moved home and began working at the Savanna Army Depot and worked there until her retirement in 1972. Polly was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was active in several church circles and served on the Altar Guild and as a Sunday school teacher. Polly loved the outdoors, especially gardening, flower arranging, watching birds and boating. She also enjoyed, reading, quilting, embroidery, canning, baking, cake and cookie decorating, traveling and attending the theatre. Most of all, Polly cherished spending time with her family.
Polly will be dearly missed by one son, Terry (Lynn) Smith of Lanark; two daughters, Linda Smith-Kiewel of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Jan (Brad) Merkel of Chadwick, Illinois; five grandchildren, Heather (Greg) Lancaster of Florence, Illinois, Rachel Smith of Lincoln, Illinois, Lauren Smith-Kiewel of Minneapolis, Leisha and Paul Merkel of Chadwick and one special great granddaughter, Alexa Lancaster.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucy Miller, Barbara Adams, Anna Mennenga and Katie Shafer and one brother, Paul Schoenhaar.
