Pauline Fox, 90, of Mount Carroll, Illinois died on May 14 due to injuries received in a motor vehicle accident on May 4. She was born on March 21, 1917 in Carlinville, Illinois to Frank and Florence Borman. She graduated from Carlinville High in 1935 during the Great Depression. To help support her family, following her graduation she worked in several clerical and administrative positions, including manager of a glove factory in Carlinville.
Ms. Fox met her future husband, Nelson D. Fox, on Valentine’s Day in 1941, and the two were married that June. After only five months together, Nelson joined the U.S. Army and, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, spent almost 5 years away serving in Europe. Their first son, David, was born on the eve of Nelson’s departure overseas.
Following the war, Pauline and Nelson moved among several towns in Illinois and Iowa before settling in 1952 on a farm north of Mount Carroll, where they would spend the remainder of their lives breeding livestock, farming, raising their four children and hosting innumerable gatherings of friends and family, including intensely competitive horseshoe and volleyball tournaments.
In 1963, Pauline began a new career as a secretary and office manager at Shimer College in Mount Carroll, where she worked until the campus closed in 1978. She then became a legal secretary for the Joyce Law Office until her retirement in 1992 at the age of 75.
Throughout her long and active life, Pauline devoted herself to her family and many friends. She loved music and enjoyed singing, playing piano and dancing. She was an avid reader and faithful bird-watcher, her feeders frequently adorned with hummingbirds, orioles, bluebirds and chickadees. She loved country life and lived quite independently following Nelson’s death in 2002. Her positive, fun‑loving outlook, accepting and caring nature, and unconditional love were the bonds of many lasting relationships.
Ms. Fox is survived by one brother, Peter (Betty) Borman of Jefferson City, MO; by her four children, David (Pat) Fox of Mount Carroll, Douglas (Diana) Fox of Poulsbo, WA, Dennis Fox of Toledo, OH, and Debra (Bruce Anderson) Fox of Willowbrook, IL; by 11 grandchildren, Ann, Alicia, Lynn, Lisa, Nicole, Erica, Kerry, Teasha, Ashley, Kayla and Margo, and by 10 great grandchildren.
