Paul Springer age 87, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away suddenly Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Morrison Community Hospital, Morrison, Illinois. A celebration of Paul’s life will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 21, 2014 at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m., Friday, November 2014 at the Hampshire Center Cemetery, Hampshire, Illinois. A Masonic service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014 with visitation following from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Paul’s memory.
Paul was born on September 25, 1927, the son of Paul and Catherine (Hamilton) Springer in Chicago, Illinois. Paul’s father passed away shortly after he was born, and he was raised by his stepfather, Lorenz and Catherine (Hamilton) Hartung. He attended Hampshire High School and graduated with the Class of 1945. During high school Paul worked for the Meat Market in Hampshire. After graduating Paul enlisted into the United States Navy and honorably served two years as a cook. He later went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1948 and began his career as a telegrapher in Hampshire, he then transferred to Savanna, Illinois and became a ticket agent. Paul retired after forty years with the Milwaukee Railroad in 1987. On March 9, 1949 he married the love of his life Barbara Hinkle in Plato Center, Illinois. They celebrated sixty-five years together.
Paul was a member of Hampshire City Council, American Legion (past commander), Cyrus Lodge (past master), Mt. Carroll, Scottish Rites of Freeport (twenty five years of degree work), Tabala Temple, Rockford and the Northern Illinois Agency on Aging. He also volunteered at the Mt. Carroll Senior Citizen Center, where he helped prepare taxes and hauled newspapers, drove people to medical appointments. Paul enjoyed sports whether he was the umpire at a baseball or softball game, he spent much of his time watching the Cubs, Bears and the NIU Huskies. Most of all Paul treasured the memories he made with his family and friends.
Paul will be dearly missed by his wife of sixty-five years, Barb; three sons, Larry (Sue) Springer of Eminence, Missouri, John Springer of Mt. Carroll, Richard (Kathy) Springer of Clinton, Iowa; a daughter, Nancy Springer of Clinton, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Mike, Charlie, Suzette, Toby, Erin, Gregg, Louie, Rustie; seven great grandchildren, Anthony, Alexandria, Dominic, Bella, Loree, Garrett, Kaden; a daughter in-law, Kara Springer; sister in-law, Edna Gittings; one brother in-law, Donald Hinkle and many nieces and nephews. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, a son, one brother, four sisters.
