Paul R. “Red” Melendy, age 96, of Savanna, Illinois, died, Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, with Reverend Larry Thomson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. A memorial gathering will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Savanna in Red’s memory.
Red was born on September 6, 1914, the son of Kyle and Nena (Groharing) Melendy in Clinton, Iowa. He attended Thomson Schools and later graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1931. Red served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946. During his enlistment, Red enjoyed playing his saxophone in the Regimental Band during World War II. Red married Florence Smith on June 18, 1936 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Florence died on January 4, 2007 in Clinton, Iowa.
After his enlistment, Red continued to play his saxophone and clarinet in the Ralph Slade Band. From 1939 –1942, Red and Florence owned and operated the Original Hire’s Root Beer stand on Chicago Avenue in Savanna, before it became the Chicken Coop. Red later owned and operated Melendy Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Savanna Rotary Club. Red was also a member of the Savanna V.F.W. and the Savanna American Legion for over fifty years. Most of all, Red loved spending time with his family and friends.
Red will be dearly missed by his daughter, Nena (David) Engaldo of Downers Grove, Illinois; two grandchildren, Jeff (Melissa) Engaldo and Jennifer (Norm) Sidler; five great grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Morgan; two nieces and three nephews.
Red was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; one sister, Leona McGuire; and three infant sisters.
