Paul F. Crandall, age 81, of Hanover, Illinois passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, Illinois. Paul had struggled with lung cancer for the past three years. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be given to the Hanover Food Bank in Hanover.
Paul was born in Wadena, Iowa February 23, 1929, son of Luther and Naomi Crandall. He graduated from the Wadena High School and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette, Iowa for one year. He then enlisted in the Marines and served for four years. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received while serving in Korea.
On June 6, 1954 he married Annella Jones in New Cambria, Missouri. They lived in Volga, Wadena and Arlington Iowa, moving to Hanover in 1976.
Paul played ball through his school years and even after that for several years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards (especially euchre) and visiting with people. He raised and raced racing quarter horses on their farm in Iowa before moving to Illinois. Paul was a staunch Cubs, Bears and Iowa Hawkeye’s fan.
He worked as a Meat Cutter and Insurance Salesman, and later became a Banker. He spent many years in the banking business in Iowa and then Illinois. He was the CEO of the Hanover State Bank for eighteen years until he retired in 1991. He then worked at Eagle Ridge Golf Course as a Ranger which he loved. Paul was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Presbyterian Church in both Wadena and Hanover.
Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Annella; two sons, Randy and Steven of Hanover; a daughter, Karla (Steve) Waltner of Chesapeake, Virginia; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Courtney and Chelsea Crandall of Hanover; Kadance, Gage and Jacelyn Waltner of Chesapeake, Virginia, and two brothers, Robert Crandall of Eagle Grove, Iowa and Max (Marge) Crandall of Kellogg, Iowa
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James; a sister, Margie and sister-in law, Vivian.
The family would like to thank hospice, the Elizabeth Nursing Home and especially Dr. Crist who saved Paul’s life more than once. We want to acknowledge the “Angel” named Bill Wolter, who picked -up Paul, his wheelchair and oxygen tank each at 7:00 a.m. each Monday to go play Euchre.
