Paul Claude Burger, age 66, of Savanna, IL, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September, 19, 2014, at the Argo Fay United Methodist Church, Argo Fay. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Paul’s memory.
Paul was born on April 9, 1948, the son of Irvin and Pauline (Bender) Burger in Sharon, Wisconsin. He attended school in Polo and Milledgeville, graduating from Milledgeville High School in 1967. He was very athletic during school, participating in both track and football. After graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Vietnam as a medical corpsman from 1969-1970. After returning to the United States, Paul married Barbara Schmitt on January 18, 1972 in Galesburg, Illinois.
Paul worked as a cheese maker for Kraft foods in Milledgeville, Illinois, and later left to become a farmer. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan, and also enjoyed deer hunting and vegetable gardening, particularly growing sweet corn. Most of all, Paul cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandkids, Chance and Shelby.
Paul will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Tara (Chad) Williams of Savanna, IL; his grandchildren, Chance and Shelby Williams; his siblings, Shirley Sword of Rock Falls, IL, Darrell Burger of Arizona, Carol (Merle) Schryver of Emerson, IL, James (Judy) Burger of Oregon, IL, Paula (Lynn) Fossett of Leaf River, IL, Keith Burger of Rockford, IL, and Carl Burger of Missouri.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Pauline; two sisters, Betty Pottinger and Pearl McCann; and a brother, Melvin Burger.
