Omer “Pete” Feller, 93, of Preston passed away peacefully on December 5, 2023 at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston. Visitation will be from 8:30-10:15 prior to the service at the church. Burial with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post # 602 will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, following Mass. A Celebration of Life luncheon and fellowship will continue following the service, at the Preston Town Hall.
Pete was born to Nick and Anna Feller of Springbrook, on February 7, 1930. He was the second of four siblings. He married Rosemary “Rosie” Till of Andrew, on June 5, 1951, and they were married for 72 years. They raised a family of six children together: Larry, Mike, Greg, Paul, Linda and Steve. Pete served in the Korean War for 2 years and came home in 1953, when he and Rosie started Feller Trucking, that they continued through the 70’s. Pete drove the trucks and Rosie answered the phone, kept the books, took orders, made schedules and found drivers if needed. He then drove for Ruan Trucking and received an award for 2 million miles accident-free. To wind down his career, he spent the last 15 years hauling cement powder for Preston Ready Mix. After driving for 64 years, Pete fully retired at age 80. Pete and Rosie worked as one unit throughout their marriage. That is a lot of work, kids, miles, and laughs.
Pete and Rosie spent over 30 years wintering at their Mesa, Arizona home. Pete always had a quick smile and a funny story. He never met a stranger and made friends easily, blessing them with an active social life. He loved horses and you would often see him on trail rides or hitching up his buggy for a ride around Preston. He enjoyed golfing, especially the “19th” hole at the Moose Lodge in Mesa. During his summers in Iowa, he would take his boat to the Mississippi river for fishing, sometimes he even caught fish! Anytime of the year, in any state, you could always find Pete in the middle of a card game: pitch, euchre, burn or playing rummy at home with Rosie. Pete would never say no to a game of cards. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 602 and served as Commander for 2 years. He belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Preston, Knights of Columbus and in his earlier years, The Preston Saddle Club and The Preston Fire Dept. A special memory for Pete was participating in the Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2012.
Pete will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Rosie, son, Mike (Laura) of Chesterton, IN; son, Greg (Lisa) of Dunedin, FL; son, Paul (Mary) of Greenwood, IN; daughter, Linda (Dean) Sieren of Keota, IA and son, Steve (Angie) of Preston, IA; 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Brother and sisters-in-law: Ray and Doris Theisen, Mick and Carol Clark, Roger and Helen Till and Jean Till. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry and his wife Carol Feller in 2016; and all of his siblings and their spouses, Milo (Arlene) Feller, Phyllis (Merrice) Steines and Shorty (Elaine) Feller. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jackson County Hospice or Preston Community Ambulance.
