Norma G. Mackey

Norma G. Mackey, age 91, of Janesville, Wisconsin, formerly of Chadwick, Illinois, passed away Monday, April 2, 2018 at Huntington Place Assisted Living and Memory Care, Janesville, WI. A private family graveside inurnment service was held April 17, 2018 at the Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick, Illinois with Reverend Mary Bohall officiating. A celebration of Norma's life will be held this summer in Oregon, when the family gathers for a reunion. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be given in Norma's honor to Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick, IL, Cargill United Methodist Church, Janesville, ECHO (echojanesville.org) or the Illinois 4H Foundation.

Norma was born April 5, 1926 in Urbana, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Lee and Freida Mae (Cruse) Waters. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, Illinois with the Class of 1944. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University in 1951. While in college, Norma met her future husband, Paul Mackey of Chadwick. Paul had just finished his time in the Army Air Corps and earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education. Upon graduation they relocated to Chadwick to farm with Paul’s mother, May Mackey.

Norma taught in rural schools in Champaign and Carroll Counties, Il before taking a teaching position in Milledgeville, Illinois starting in 1955 and retiring in 1983. She was proud of her career as a teacher, especially that several of her pupils became her teaching colleagues. Paul taught in Mt. Carroll Schools and upon retirement they moved to Edgerton, Wisconsin to be near their oldest daughter’s family.

Norma enjoyed her many clubs and volunteer opportunities, collecting antiques, needlework and genealogy. She was a member of Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Extension Homemakers.

Norma will be dearly missed by her daughters, Ann (Christopher) Keim of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin and Ruth (Michael) Strauch of Vancouver, Washington; grandchildren Sarah (Mark Klebanoff) Keim of Worthington, OH, Rebecca (Nathan Pruitt) Keim of Slingerlands, NY, Aaron (Nicole) Keim of Hood River, OR, Rachael (James Smith) Strauch of Vancouver, WA, Jessie (Ginger) Strauch of Gillette, WY and Bricelyn (Justin Nelson) Strauch of Salt Lake City, UT ; great-grandchildren Elisha Strauch, Claire, Elizabeth and Eleanor Pruitt, Greta Klebanoff, Henry Keim and Teya Nelson; her sister Esther Waters Maron of St. Joseph, IL and four nieces and seven nephews.

Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Paul, her parents, and her brother, Robert Waters, St. Joseph, IL. The family wishes to thank the caring professional staff of Huntington Place, Janesville and Heartland Hospice, Rockford, IL for their support.
