Norma Leighton

Norma Leone Dora Enke Leighton, age 89, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away on August 14, 2008 at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home in Galena, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, Hanover, Pastor Lynne Matthews and Pastor Bonnie Daviess will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in Norma’s memory.

Norma was born on July 24, 1919, the daughter of Edward and Elsie (Kuchenbecker) Enke in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Norma graduated from Prairie du Chien High School class of 1936. On May 3, 1941, Norma married Robert B. Leighton in Lancaster, Wisconsin.

Norma worked at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien and later worked at Atwood Manufacturing in Stockton, Illinois for ten years and Hanover School District as a cook for ten years. She was a member of the Hanover United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary. Norma enjoyed crocheting and reading. One of her biggest passions was her flowers and flower gardens, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Norma will be dearly missed by her husband; Robert; a son, Harvey (Lynn) Leighton of Hanover; three daughters, Doris (Harold) Haggerty of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Phyllis (Steve) Schneider of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Rosemary (the late Tom) Haring of Hanover; twelve grandchildren, Venus (Bill) Hilgart, Roxan (Kevin) Reas, Monica (Bill) Akers, Dena (Jeroen) Spaan, Dereck (Kim) Dillow, Dandy Dillow, Darra Riley, Darcie (Michael) Fuqua, Jody Haring, Brenda (Charles) Carafano, Tommy Haring Jr., and Christopher Haring; twenty-five great grandchildren; five brothers, Virgil (Eunice) Enke of Prairie du Chien, Lyle Enke of Janesville, Wisconsin, Gilbert (Rosemary) Enke of Janesville, Floyd (Violet) Enke of Janesville, Donald Enke of Belvidere, Illinois; one sister, Delma Jean Head of Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Phillip Enke; an infant brother and sister; and a son-in-law, Tom Haring.
