Norma Jean Floming, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, IL passed away September 19, 2023 at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 25, 2023 at SS John and Catherine Catholic Church in Mt. Carroll at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, at Law Jones Funeral Home, in Mt. Carroll, as well as one hour at the church, before Monday’s funeral Mass.
Norma was born March 20, 1932 in Geneseo, IL, the daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Nightingale) Barton. She attended Geneseo schools. On April 11, 1953, Norma married Richard C. Floming at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Atkinson, IL.
Norma cleaned houses in her younger years, before working four years each at Law’s Motel and Mt. Carroll School District #304 cafeteria. She and Richard also owned Floming’s Tap, in Mt. Carroll for more than a decade. There she would regularly bartend and prepare lunch specials. Her most important work though, was her many years as a farm wife and mother. Later in life, Norma worked as a cook at the Caroline Mark Home, a place where she would later take up residence, after Richard’s passing.
In her younger years, she was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge, and she and Richard used to love to go dancing, and hang with their many friends from their high school days while attending alumni events in and around Atkinson. She had a strong love of shopping, and being a woman of specific taste, she was quite particular about her hair and clothing.
Norma was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who placed family above all else. She loved embroidery, and made many baby quilts for her family and friends. Delicious homemade breads and a truly awesome potato salad, were routinely on the menu when you came to Norma’s house. She also enjoyed canning, something she did in her home and during her time at the Caroline Mark home.
Norma will be dearly missed by her sons, Steven (Tonda) Floming, of High Ridge, MO, Alen Floming, of Mt. Carroll, and Richard (Deb Jensen) Floming, of Tampico, IL; daughters, Sandra (LaMoine) Aude, of Mt. Carroll, Karen Philips, of Mt. Carroll, and Jean (Ken Reins) Floming, of Chadwick, IL; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Minnie; husband, Richard; sisters, Alice (Charles) Hopkey, Dorothy (Sterling) Nelson, Marilyn (Howard) Newman, and Ruth (Sidney) Rose; granddaughter, Amanda Aude; and great-grandchildren William and Ruth Naglosky.
