Nona was not only born and raised in Hanover, but lived in the same farmhouse for eighty-eight years. Nona was the first child of Ernest and Phoebe (Shaw) Campbell, born June 20, 1923. She graduated from Hanover High School in 1941 and on January 12, 1942, Nona married Norman Stewart, just before Norman served in the Army during WWII. Their union produced eight children and they celebrated 37 years of marriage until Norman’s passing in 1978.
Nona worked at the Savanna Army Depot for 26 years until her retirement. She also worked at the Hanover Woolen Mill during WWII, inspecting military uniforms. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, knitting, reading, and gardening. During her entire lifetime, Nona’s home was the gathering place for family, and she cherished that time. When her children were young, Nona enjoyed making their clothing. She faced many challenges in life with faith and courage. Nona was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Hanover United Methodist Church.
Nona will be dearly missed by her children, Stanley (Nancie) Stewart of Lombard, Illinois, Sandi Stewart of Hanover, Kay (Larry) Snow of Clinton, Iowa, Joseph (Sally) Stewart of Bettendorf, Iowa, Cynthia (Rick) Hedeman of Brandon, Iowa, and Debra Gunther of Aurora, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
