Neil Joseph Sheedy, age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna, with Reverend Michael Wey officiating. Inurnment will be in Savanna Township Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Savanna V.F.W. Post# 2223. A memorial gathering will be held from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Savanna VFW Post# 2223 in Neil’s memory.Neil was born on November 26, 1924 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the son of Ambrose and Flora (Burdeau) Sheedy. Neil was from a family of eleven and was the ninth child. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served through World War II in the South Pacific. He served on board the USS Twining and during his enlistment the crew earned five battle stars. Neil married Beverly Ann Clennon Allshouse on August 15, 1957 in Savanna. Beverly passed away on October 7, 2007 in Savanna.Neil worked for the Milwaukee Line Railroad for forty years as a Conductor and a Brakeman until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the VFW in Suamico, Wisconsin and the Savanna Moose Lodge. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union and the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees Inc. Neil was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and loved spending time with his family and friends.Neil will be dearly missed by his seven children, Sue (Paul) Mills, Sandra (Bob) Wolfe, Edward (Judy) Allshouse, Tammy Humphreys, Timothy (Jenise) Sheedy, Terry Miller, Trudy Sheedy Corlis; nineteen grandchildren, Jim, John, Jackie, Joanna, Andrea, Edward, Christina, Tracey, Shawn, Alyshia, Jennifer, Stephanie, Tiffany, Kole, Travis, Stevie, Katie, Lindsay, and Grace; twenty seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert (Mary Jean) Sheedy.Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, one son, Donald; five brothers, Irvin, Harold, Lawrence, Ambrose and Willard Sheedy; and four sisters, Evelyn Sheedy, Margaret Weinberg, Mildred Weycker and Dorothy Bussiere.
