Neil Eric Libberton, 100, of Mt. Carroll, IL., passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll.
Neil was born March 30, 1923 on Good Friday, son of Will and Florence (Hicks) Libberton. He went to school in a one room school house in Oil Valley and went on to graduate from Mt. Carroll High School in 1941. Neil started his work life as a farm hand until 1952 and then worked for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. In 1962, he began working for the Mt. Carroll Post Office until his retirement in 1990.
On his birthday in 1956 he married the love of his life, Mary Albrecht and their family became complete with the birth of their two children, Larry and Lori. Family was very important to Neil. For years Neil and Mary cooked delicious Sunday meals for the entire family. Birthdays were a special day to request a favorite meal. So whether it was hot dogs or a full Thanksgiving feast, Neil and Mary always delivered. Until the age of 95, Neil would be spotted with Larry and Lori hunting for treasures at garage sales. He never missed the grandchildren’s school activities, whether it was ball games or plays, Grandpa was always there for support.
Neil was a lifelong member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. His faith was a very important part of his life. He was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Tape Ministry and the hand bell choir, and also delivered meals on wheels. Neil and Mary were the custodians of the church for many years.
Neil’s motto was “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” and he lived by those words. Anyone who knew Neil was touched by his kindness, humor and mild temperament.
Neil will be greatly missed by his daughter, Lori (Michael) Brummer; granddaughters, Lauren (Brett) Schwandt and Stephanie (Jason Abney) Hebeler; grandsons, Ronald Delp, Joshua (Jordan) Delp, Steven Delp and Brett Libberton; three great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Mckinley and Caleb.
Neil is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his son, Larry; grandson Bryan Hebeler; his brothers, Peter, Lavelle, Alvin, Clarence, Charles, Richard, Cid and Russell; and his sisters, Sarah Schmidt, Luella Skiles and Alicia Withhart.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church.
