Ned C. Dollinger, age 85, of Lanark, Illinois passed away, Friday, September 29, 2006, surrounded by his loving family at the Rockford Memorial Hospital, Rockford, Illinois. A memorial visitation and time of fellowship will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2006 at the Lanark United Methodist Church in the Fireside room, Lanark, Illinois. In 1979, Ned helped his son John build the two stone fireplaces in the Church Education Wing. Cremation rites will be accorded with a private family interment to follow. In Lieu of flowers a general memorial fund has been established in Ned’s memory.
Ned was born on September 22, 1921 in Chadwick, Illinois the son of John and Regina (Schreiner) Dollinger. He graduated from the Lanark High School with the class of 1940 and later attended Northern Illinois University for two years. Ned married Betty Rowland on February 17, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the U.S. Army for four years and was stationed in Fort Monroe, Virginia. Upon his discharge from the Army, he operated Dollinger Market in Lanark with his father. Ned was also the Lanark Postmaster in Lanark, Illinois from 1948 until 1971. In the early 1950’s Ned and his family planted Christmas Tree’s in Freedom Township. That Business later became the Dollinger Christmas Tree Farm. The original property is now part of the Lake Carroll golf course.
In his younger years Ned was an avid hunter who later enjoyed shooting skeet and sporting clays. Ned enjoyed the outdoors and loved to morel mushroom hunt in the hills of Carroll County. He also liked to carve duck decoys and his wife Betty enjoyed painting them. His favorite vacations were his yearly trips to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and also trips to Georgia, Colorado and the Southwest. Ned’s family was very important to him and he spent a great deal of his retirement working at the tree farm with them.
He is survived by his wife Betty of 63 years; one son John (Janie) Dollinger of Shannon, Illinois; one daughter, Jill Gaar of Ennis, Montana; two grandsons, Tim (Cathy) Gaar of McAllister, Montana and Mark (Shanna) Dollinger of Lanark; one half brother Rex (Peggy) Dollinger of Bayfield, Wisconsin; one aunt, Evelyn Cook of Freeport, Illinois and one nephew, Matt Dollinger of Chicago, Illinois.
