Nancy Velcich, age 85, of Freeport, IL, formerly of Elizabeth, IL, and Chicago, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Law Jones Funeral Home in Elizabeth, IL. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Elizabeth.
Nancy was born on October 5, 1939, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Edwin and Francis (Kisor) Schauer. She attended Maria High School, graduating in 1957. After graduation, she worked at Western Electric before meeting the love of her life, Angelo Velcich.
Nancy and Angelo’s love story began at a polka club called Polka Dot, where their shared passion for dancing blossomed. They were married on April 4, 1964, in Oak Lawn, IL. Together, they raised two sons, Anthony and Richard, and shared 53 wonderful years of marriage until Angelo’s passing in 2017.
Nancy was a devoted and active mother. During her sons' childhoods, she volunteered for Boy Scouts, organized block parties, and supported football events. Known for her sociable and talkative nature, Nancy always prioritized her family and was a talented cook who delighted in preparing meals for loved ones.
Nancy and Angelo cherished spending time with their grandchildren, playing cards and games whenever they gathered. They also enjoyed camping adventures in Wisconsin and Canada, creating lasting family memories. In 1995, they purchased land near Elizabeth, IL, and in 2002, moved from Chicago to the countryside, where they embraced a simpler, more peaceful life.
Nancy will be deeply missed by her two sons, Anthony “Tony” (Mary) Velcich of Orangeville, IL, and Richard (Helene) Velcich of Tinley Park, IL; five grandchildren: Nicholas, Jessica (fiancé Ryan), Lauren, Michelle, and Sarah; and three great-grandchildren: Kalee, Jacob, and Derek.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo; her parents, Edwin and Frances (Kisor) Schauer; and her sister, Florence Quinn.
Nancy’s warmth, love, and devotion to her family and friends will be forever remembered.
