Merlyn Donovan “Mindy” Schreiner, age 90, of Chadwick, Illinois, died Thursday, November 1, 2007, at Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at the Hope United Methodist Church in Chadwick, Illinois with Reverend Melwyn Alagodi officiating. Burial will be in Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 9:00 –11:00 AM prior to the service at the church. Memorials are requested to be made to the Hope United Methodist Church of Chadwick, Illinois.
Merlyn was born on May 13, 1917 in Coleta, Illinois, the son of Fred and Bertha (Hoffman) Schreiner. He attended Chadwick High School graduating with the Class of 1935. Merlyn was proud of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
On February 19, 1940, Merlyn married Marion Geison in Chadwick, Illinois. Merlyn and Marion farmed for 30 years in the Chadwick area. He worked 8 years for Spring Chemical in Milledgeville, IL. Merlyn worked for the Illinois State Highway Dept. of Transportation for 27 years and eight months. He worked in County and Township Government for twenty-eight years including the Carroll County Board, in which he served as Chairman of the Board from 1965 to 1967. Merlyn held the position of the Salem Township Supervisor until October, 2007. He served on the Chadwick School Board for several years and was actively involved at Hope United Methodist Church, serving on various committees throughout the years including the Superintendent of Sunday School and singing in the church choir for over 50 years.
Merlyn very much loved and enjoyed the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, and sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Marion of Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois; two daughters, Darla Krzyzak in Middletown, New York and Angela (Morris) Harms of Rockford, Illinois; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Merlyn was preceded in death by two sisters, Leona Stover and Alberta Schreiner and one brother, Wilbur Schreiner.
