Merlin A. Sager, age 94, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, formerly of Savanna, Illinois died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Reverend Mark Harkness of the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Savanna Township Cemetery in Savanna. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m., until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor #17, Chicago, IL. 60601-7633 or a charity of the donor's choice in Merlin's memory.
Merlin was born on August 11, 1913, the son of Ralph T. and Anna Mary (Pelikan) Sager in Savanna, Illinois. He graduated from Savanna High School. Merlin served in the United States Army Pacific Theater during World War II. During his enlistment, he played the clarinet in the Army Band. Merlin married Gladys M. Schall on October 19, 1941 in Savanna. Gladys died on August 4, 1972. He then married Vivian Mercer Ackerman on November 25, 1972 in Mt. Carroll. Vivian died on January 26, 1994. Merlin was most recently married to Clara Ferguson in 1996 of Mount Carroll.
Merlin was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier. He also owned a bicycle repair shop in Savanna and Mount Carroll for many years. He was a member of the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church and a past member of First United Methodist Church in Savanna. Merlin enjoyed mushroom and squirrel hunting, riding his bicycle and playing the saxophone.
Merlin will be dearly missed by his wife, Clara; one step-son, David (Toko) Ackerman of Silver Spring, Maryland; one step-daughter, Carol (Bill) Tower of Scottsdale, Arizona; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Gladys and Vivian; one brother, Paul Sager; and one sister, Guinevere Patton.
