Merle C. Holy

Merle C. Holy, 94, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away on October 14, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. He was born in rural Carroll County, Illinois to Earl and Myrtle (Sisler) Holy on December 20, 1924. He graduated from Savanna High School in 1943. He served his country as an Army Medic, from 1946-48, stationed at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. He then went into the interior and exterior painting business.

On August 14, 1955, Merle married Norma Jean Hanson. They celebrated 63 years of marriage until Norma’s passing on March 31, 2019. In the early 1970’s Merle worked at the Savanna High School as a custodian where he was known as “Smiley” the Janitor. They still called him Smiley to this day. In his leisure hours he performed magic tricks for many clubs and organizations in the area. Merle and his wife, Norma were extensive travelers, traveling either by car or then in later life via bus trips. Dozens of trips to Branson, Missouri, taking in as many shows as time provided. Merle was a member of the Kilburn Avenue United Brethren Church in Rockford, Illinois, after his beloved Center Hill Church closed.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Merle is survived by his son, Richard of Savanna, Illinois; many cousins and a multitude of friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma on March 31, 2019, his parents, and a brother, Paul. Private family services will be held.
