This is a Tribute To Melvin Ray Jones who passed away on April 4, 1989.
Mel was born July 2, 1938, the son of Charles and June (Johnson) Jones in Moline, Illinois. On August 4, 1959, Mel married Jean Taniges in Casey, Illinois. He attended Southern Illinois University and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.
Mel had been a Funeral Director for 27 years, owning Law-Jones Funeral Homes in Savanna, Thomson, Hanover, Elizabeth, Illinois and Sabula, Iowa. Mel held the position of Carroll County Coroner for 13 years. He was a member of the Savanna City Hospital Board, the Savanna Moose Lodge, Savanna Masonic Lodge, the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, the Savanna First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Mel was a member of the Savanna Rotary Club, past member of the Savanna Chamber of Commerce and the Savanna School Board. He was the resident Savanna Historian, giving over 580 historical presentations in the area. Flying was also a passion for Mel, he was a licensed Pilot.
Mel is survived by his wife, Jean; four sons, Michael (Janice) Jones of Savanna, Mark and Maury Jones, both of Chicago and Matthew of Grayslake, Illinois; one granddaughter, Alyssa; his parents, Mason and June Horsman of Denver, Colorado and a sister, Judy Jones of Santa Barbara, California. Mel is preceded in death by his father.
