Maxwell "Mac" West

Maxwell “Mac” West, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna with Father Moises Apostol as Celebrant. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be for the Gazebo at Big Meadows, or St. John’s Catholic Church.
Mac was born on May 11, 1925, the son of William and Leola (Knippers) West in Sulphur, Louisiana. He grew up learning to farm and doing chores before and after school. Mac married Lorrene Johns on December 1, 1967 in Savanna.
Mac proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII as a Seabee, and in the United States Army in the Korean War. After he retired from the Army, he later worked as a Nuclear Weapons Maintenance Specialist, which brought him to Savanna. Mac was a member of the Savanna VFW, the American Legion, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved golfing, fishing, hunting and most of all, spending time with his family.
Mac will be dearly missed by his wife of 48 years, Lorrene; one son, Richard (Dee) Breuning of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; three daughters, Gloria (James) Scott of Lander, Wyoming; Jeanette (Jason) Sturtevant of Savanna; Peggy (Robert) Cini of Starkville, Mississippi; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Leola; three brothers; three sisters, and a twin sister.
