Maurice R. "Maury" Berlage

Maurice R. “Maury” Berlage, age 76 of Elizabeth, Illinois, died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Church of St. Mary, Elizabeth with Father Dan Tranel as Celebrant. Burial with Military Rites will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa in Maury’s memory.
Maury was born on October 11, 1936, the son of Joseph and Florence (Becker) Berlage on the family farm in rural Elizabeth. He attended Elizabeth High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. Maury proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1959. He married Carole E. Brown on April 30, 1960 in the Church of St. Mary.
Maury started Berlage Plumbing and Heating in 1962 and continued working until his retirement in 2000. After retiring, Maury worked maintaining the Apple River Fort, Elizabeth until 2009. Maury was a lifetime member of the Church of St. Mary, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and attending grandchildren’s athletic events. Most of all, Maury cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Maury will be dearly missed by his wife, Carole of Elizabeth; three daughters, Lynn (Curtis) Kloft of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Debra (Donald) Altfillisch of Elizabeth and Rebecca (Rick) Palo of Ogden, Utah; nine grandchildren, Crystal (Josh) Kloft-Redenbaugh, Cory, Kyle and Kaitlin Kloft, Chad, Matthew and Megan Altfillisch and Ryan and Tyler Palo; one brother, Larry (Kay) Berlage of Elizabeth and one sister, Ann (Bert) Tranel of Galena, Illinois.
Maury was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and one sister.
