Mary L. Woessner, age 84 of Lena, Illinois formerly of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died on Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Lena Living Center, Lena. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll with Reverend Teri Lafferty officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll. A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Mount Carroll or FHN Hospice in Mary’s memory.
Mary was born at home on July 15, 1927, the daughter of Donald and Vernie (Smith) Kearnaghan in Mount Carroll. She attended Mount Carroll High School and graduated with the Class of 1945. Mary later attended Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin and St. Francis Nursing School in Freeport, Illinois. Mary was united in marriage to Marvin Woessner on June 22, 1947 in Shannon, Illinois.
Mary was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family and raising her four children. She later worked as the Secretary to the Dean of Shimer College, Mount Carroll for thirteen years. Mary and her husband, Marvin also owned and operated Assurance First Title and Escrow, Mount Carroll until retiring in 1992. In their younger years, Mary and Marvin loved taking their children on the river and camping at Timberlake. Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mount Carroll for fifty-five years, where she taught Sunday School and was active in many church circles. They enjoyed spending winters together in Bonita Springs, Florida, where they attended church and had many friends. Most of all, Mary loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She bought them Christmas ornaments every year since they were born. She truly enjoyed playing the piano, traveling, shopping and reading.
Mary will be dearly missed by her husband, Marvin; one son Brian (Cynthia) Woessner of Mount Carroll; three daughters, Deborah (Herman Wild) Polhill of Hanover, Teresa (Randy) Criddle of Byron, Illinois and Kristina (Dick) Mazzie of West Bloomfield, Michigan; eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and several cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
