Mary H. Swiech, age 103, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Sunday, February 22, 2015, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at SS. John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A Rosary service will be held at 4:30 p.m. prior to the visitation at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Mary’s memory.
Mary was born July 27, 1911, the daughter of George and Antoinette (Skotnicki) Nykaza in Chicago, Illinois. On November 30, 1933, she married John Swiech in Chicago. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before John’s death on January 20, 1999.
Mary and John owned and operated S&S Upholstering. She loved working with her husband, and together they manufactured awnings, upholstered furniture, and made furniture frames. She was also a skilled seamstress. She and John also farmed for many years north of Mt. Carroll. Mary loved working in her garden and visiting with friends. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and playing with her many grandchildren.
Mary was a longtime member of St. John and Catherine Catholic Church in Mt. Carroll, the St. John and Catherine Ladies Society, and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Mary will be dearly missed by her two children, John (Thelma) Swiech of Mt. Carroll and Margaret Pociecha of Mt. Carroll; eight grandchildren, Teresa (Bill) Halcomb of Clinton, Iowa, Frank (Mary Jane) Weber of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, John (Delene) Weber of Mawson Lakes, Australia, Mark (Jody) Swiech of Bristow, Virginia, Pat (John) Jones of Walton, Indiana, Jean (Phil) Girard of Glendale Heights, Illinois, Steve Swiech of Mt. Carroll and Tom (Andrea) Pociecha of Apple Valley, Minnesota; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Josephine Grubb of Stevensville, Montana.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; three sisters, Louise Szaflarski, Charlotte Hovorka, and Helen Karpiel; one brother, John Nykaza; and one brother in-law, Albert Grubb.
