Mary "Mae" Robbe

Mary “Mae” G. Robbe age 101, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. A graveside service will be held at 10:30, Friday July 8, 2016 at the Savanna Township Cemetery. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial fund has been established in Mae’s memory.
Mae was born May 28, 1914 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Walter and Mary (Blue) Forrest. She became a proud American citizen in 1941 after taking her U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights test in Freeport, Illinois, her port of entry. Mae attended Issac Brock Grade School in Winnepeg, Canada, William Penn Nixon Grade School in Chicago, Kelvyn Park Junior High School in Chicago, and Carl Schurz High School, Chicago. On February 12, 1938 she married Thomas Max Robbe in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, where Rev. Fetterholf officiated. Thomas died June 13, 1998.
Mae worked 18 years at the Savanna Garment Factory and six years for Eaton Values Corporation making Coca-Cola machines. Mae was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Savanna for 78 years where she taught Sunday School. She was also a Woman of the Moose for over 50 years and a member of NARFE. In retirement she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and making rag rugs with the wonderful Women’s Group of the First Presbyterian Church. She loved her beloved Chicago Cubs, attending their games along with baseball games in Clinton, Iowa, with her husband who was a Pittsburg Pirates fan. Her biggest joy in life was her grandchildren.
Mae is survived by her son, Thomas (Letha) Robbe of Savanna; two grandchildren, Susan (Scott) Curley of Savanna, Brian (Tara) Robbe of Bentonville, Arkansas; four great-grandchildren, Dalton (Amanda Petersen) Swiech, Taylor Lee (Blake) Morris, Riley Catherine Robbe, and Jackson Alton Robbe; and three nephews, Terry, Tim and Randy Forrest of Chicago. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas; brothers, Tom and Gordon Forrest; daughter-in-law, Ruth; sisters-in-law, Janette (Jay) Forrest and Pauline Forrest.
