Mary "Virginia" Fry began her career in teaching at a one-room country school. Along with teaching, she was a devoted Farm Wife and Mother. At the age of 89, Virginia passed into the presence of our Lord Sunday, November 17, 2013 at FHN Freeport Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois.
Virginia was born May 24, 1924 in Savanna, the daughter of William and Carrie (Eisenbise) Bissikumer. Even at a young age she wanted to be in the "thick of things" as she would tag-along with her dad on farming chores. Virginia attended Arnold's Grove Country School. She is a graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School with the Class of 1942 and received her teaching education from Shimer College, Mt. Carroll. On June 29, 1947, Virginia married Forrest E. Fry at the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, Lanark. They celebrated fifty-three years of marriage. Forrest passed away July 29, 2000.
In the 1940s, Virginia taught in one-room country schools for five years, including Arnold and Slick Country Schools. She then became a homemaker while raising her children, and returned to teaching at the Mt. Carroll Elementary School from 1971 until her retirement in 2006. One of her favorite parts of teaching was "playground duty" as she taught life lessons to the children, such as "Stand up for yourself because no one else will do it as well as you can" and "Never be a quitter." Virginia helped hundreds of Mt. Carroll kids get off on the right start.
She was a lifelong member of the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, Lanark. Virginia enjoyed antiquing and auctions and played piano most of her life.
Virginia will be dearly missed by her two sons, Nowell (Monica) Fry of Schwenksville, Pennsylvania and William Fry of Mt. Carroll. Virginia is preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Forrest,; and a sister, Margaret Zillhart.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren, Lanark. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be given in Virginia's memory to the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren.
