Marvin Henry "Marve" Moltmann, age 89, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois slipped peacefully into eternity Easter morning Sunday, March 23, 2008 surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll with Reverend David Vidler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials are requested for the Carroll County Humane Society and First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll
Marvin was born April 25, 1918 in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Henry and Caroline (Schneider) Moltmann. He was a graduate of the Savanna Township High School with the Class of 1936. After High School, Marvin worked as a Ford car salesman in Savanna until 1940. On January 21, 1940, Marvin married Mildred "Millie" Fulrath in Savanna.
Marvin worked at the Savanna Ordinance Depot and then the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama until 1944. He served in the U.S. Army until 1946 in the Southern Pacific and in South Korea. Marvin attended the University of Alabama and worked in a Ford dealership as a Parts and Service Manager. In 1949, Marvin and Millie purchased the Ford dealership in Mt. Carroll along with his brother in-law, Max Smith. They operated Moltmann – Smith Ford for forty years until they sold to Virgil Bocker in 1989.
Marvin was a doting husband, father and grandfather. His motto was always "Family First." He will be remembered by many as a great story-teller and an optimist with an incredible sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Millie, working with his hands, and spending time with his dogs.
Marvin was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Carroll and the Mt. Carroll American Legion. He served as the president of the Mt. Carroll Commercial Club, which later became the Mt. Carroll Chamber of Commerce, and was a charter member of the Mt. Carroll Rotary Club. He was an avid Stock Car racing fan and owned a stock car, #44, with partner Max Smith. They raced their car at Sterling, Clinton, Iowa and the Davenport, Iowa fairgrounds. They won several championships.
Marvin will be dearly missed by his wife, Millie of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll; three daughters, Linda (Ralph) Soderholm of Colona, Illinois, Mary Lou (Edwin) Bennett of Bull Valley, Illinois and Jill (Rod) Bess of Mt. Carroll; a son, Jim (Bonnie) Moltmann of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Tim Golden, Steve (Kris) Golden, Ryan (Shanna) Bess, Emily (Scott) Swanigan and Tiffany (Craig) Cassata; and ten great grandchildren, Broc, James and Tony Golden, Erin, Will and Lexi Golden, Grant and Grace Swanigan and Ben and Logan Cassata. Marvin is preceded in death by a grandson, Peter; two brothers, Grant and Paul; and both parents.
