Martha Jane Canavan

Martha Jane Canavan, longtime owner of Canavan's in Savanna, loved sharing her life with family and friends. At the age of 93, Martha passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna.
Cremation rites have been accorded with Inurnment taking place at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Clinton Memorial Cemetery, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at Rastrelli’s Restaurant, 238 Main Ave, Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army, or for Masses at the Church.
Martha was born February 22, 1922, the daughter of Jacob and Mahala (Gill) Sturtevant in Savanna. She graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1940. Martha married Kenneth Canavan on May 22, 1944 in Clinton. They celebrated 43 years of marriage until Kenneth’s death in 1987.
After graduating high school, Martha worked as a ticket taker at the Savanna Times Theater. Later after marriage, they owned and operated a grocery store on Superior and Chicago Avenue in Savanna. She also worked at the Savanna Army Depot painting hand grenades during World War II. Martha and Kenneth moved to Forest Park, a suburb of Chicago, where she worked at a quilting studio and in the lab of an aerosol can factory. They returned to Savanna in 1971 and bought May’s Paddock Room on Main Street which became Canavan’s Pub. Martha had been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna and St. Bernardine Catholic Church in Forest Park. She was also a past member of the Savanna Moose Lodge, and the Savanna VFW Auxiliary. Martha enjoyed her friends and her stay at the Pinnacle Place in Savanna, where she lived for four years.
Martha will be dearly missed by her son, Timothy Canavan of Forest Park; two grandchildren, George (Leigh Ann) Canavan, Elizabeth (Andrew) Stout; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Hannah, Connor and Caitlin; Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, her parents, Jacob and Mahala; brothers, Frank “Shorty”, Arthur, Russell, Royal, Clayton “Nipper”, Loren, Jack, Robert, Richard; and sisters, Otella, Gladys “Tillie”, Vida, Garnet, and Hazel “Kike”.
