Marlene Martha Anna Smith, age 82, of Savanna, Illinois died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at her son’s home in Denver, Colorado. A Celebration of Marlene’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Burial will take place in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Marlene’s memory, memorials will be given to St. Peters Lutheran Church, Timberlake Playhouse and Aviant Hospice.
Marlene was born on October 26, 1933, in Downers Grove, Illinois, the daughter of Alfred J. and Mildred E. (Stapleton) Bolte. She attended Concordia High School in River Forest, Illinois, graduating with the Class of 1950. Following high school she attended Concordia College. On November 1, 1951, Marlene married Thomas I. Smith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Carroll. Thomas passed away September 29, 2009.
Marlene and Tom were former owners of the Sears Catalog Store in Savanna. Marlene worked as a sales consultant at Carpetland USA in Clinton, Iowa. She was a lifelong member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, past president of the Lydian Society, a member of the church choir, Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society, and chairperson of the funeral dinner committee for the last several years. Marlene volunteered at the Timber Lake Playhouse and held her annual rummage sale to raise money for the playhouse. Marlene enjoyed reading, crosswords, Sudoku Crypto Puzzles, writing poetry and walking. Most of all, Marlene treasured the time she spent with her family.
Marlene is survived by her daughters, Diane, Sheryl and Gwen (Gail McLaughlin) and a son, Gregg (Robert Eckles) Smith; grandchildren, Jennifer, Janelle, Jamie, Nathan, Nikki, Caroline, Michael, William, Jillian and several great grandchildren; a sister, Fern Rowland-Caulum and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Marlene is preceded in death by her husband, Tom; son, Rick; sister, Avis Klingbeil-Browning; parents; in-laws, Florence and Richard Smith and a brother and sister in-law, Alfred and Imogene Bolte.
