Marlene Mary Uhl Chunes, age 67, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died suddenly on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, after a courageous battle with cancer. A funeral mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009, at the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth followed by a burial service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, masses and donations for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
Marlene was born a twin on April 12, 1942, in Farley, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Verena “Pat” (George) Uhl. She graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1960 and started her work career. She worked as a waitress and legal secretary before starting her employment as a credit adjustor, a position she loved and worked at until her retirement in 2002. She married Tony Chunes on March 31, 1990, in Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield, Illinois.
Marlene was a fun loving, people person who lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed dancing and traveling to new places. She spent hours with her sister and husband playing cards and dominos and watching her beloved Yankees. Marlene was also an avid Snoopy collector.
Marlene is survived by her husband of 19 years, Tony Chunes of Elizabeth, Illinois; one son, Allen (Lisa) Eichmeier of Fountain, Michigan, by a previous marriage; two grandchildren, Brandon and Stephanie; one brother, William (Gayle) Uhl of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Marilyn (the late Kenneth) Berlage of Elizabeth, Trish (Randy) Krohmer of Evergreen Park, Illinois, and Mary (Scott) Lafferty of Wilmette, Illinois; one sister – in – law, Susan (Mike) Moser; three stepsons, Brett Chunes, Greg Chunes, and Jeff Chunes, all of Springfield, Illinois; her mother, Pat Uhl of Elizabeth; her mother – in – law, Lela Chunes of Springfield; and several nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.
Marlene was preceded in death by her father, Edward Uhl; two brothers, Robert and Thomas; and one brother – in – law, Kenneth Berlage.
