Marjorie L. Papke, age 87, of Preston, Iowa, died Monday, November 03, 2014, at The Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, Iowa. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2014 at the Church, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Calvary Lutheran Church are appreciated.
Marjorie was born May 11, 1927, to Fred C. “Jeff” and Emelia Stamp-Schroeder in Preston, Iowa. She attended Preston School and graduated in 1945 as Valedictorian. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa, until 1948. She attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for two years and worked at the E.I. DuPont de Nemours Co. office in Clinton, Iowa for approximately two years.
She married Paul J. Papke on November 25, 1948 in Preston. They farmed in Clinton and Jackson Counties. She worked for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa, Iowa and then worked as a bookkeeper at Feeders Supply in Miles, Iowa, for 26 years, retiring in December 1992.
Marjorie was active in various positions at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, Iowa, a member from 1948 to the present. She was also an active member of the Miles American Legion Auxiliary, serving five terms as President and serving two terms as Jackson County Legion Auxiliary President. Her main interests in life were her family, her church, and music.
Marjorie is survived by two sons, Lon (Dianne) Papke of Miles, Iowa, and Jeff (Diane) Papke of Harker Heights, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Sue Papke of Miles, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John Schroeder of Atlantic, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hatteberg of Savanna, Illinois, previously of Miles, Iowa. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, in 1982; and a son, Rand, in 2004.
