Marjorie Ellen Evans Massey, age 97, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at the Alverno Nursing Home in Clinton, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna, Illinois. Inurnment will be in Middlebury Cemetery, Barneveld, Wisconsin, at a later date. Visitation will be held 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, Savanna, or to the West Carroll Middle School Library in Marge’s memory.Marjorie was born May 9, 1911, the daughter of Herbert Winfield and Margaret (Kenney) Evans in Oneida, Illinois. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1929. Marjorie graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois with her B.A. Degree in 1934. Upon completion of her studies at Knox College she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin and graduated with a M.A. in 1943. Marjorie married Wright Ford Massey on August 7, 1948 in Galesburg, Illinois. Ford died on May 20, 1964 in Savanna, Illinois.Marjorie was a teacher for twenty-eight years at Fulton Elementary School, Fulton, Illinois, Lyons Junior High, Clinton, Iowa, East High School, Rockford, Illinois, and Savanna Junior High School, Savanna, Illinois. Marj was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Chapter Epsilon, Chapter C.E. of P.E.O., Delta Sigma Rho; Honorary Forensic Fraternity, Carroll County Retired Teachers, and Wednesday Study Club. She was an active member of Savanna United Methodist Church; serving as the Superintendent of Nursery Department, on the Church Council of Ministries, Building Committee, Esther Circle, and taught in various departments of Sunday School. Marj served as Trustee of Savanna Public Library for approximately thirty years.Marjorie loved to read and give book reviews. She was very proud of Massey Field in Savanna named in her husband’s honor. Marjorie always looked forward to summers in Wisconsin with her loving extended family. In recent years she loved to follow the interests of her grandchildren, as well as her sons' basketball and volleyball teams. Marjorie was always appreciative of the support of all her family and friends.Marjorie is survived by two sons, Mark F. (Kathy) Massey of Clinton, Iowa and Evan W. (Amy) Massey of Galesburg, Illinois; three grandchildren, Evan M. Massey and Sarah Massey of Clinton, Iowa, and Allen Massey of Galesburg.Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Ford and her parents.
