Marilyn was born September 28, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Carl and Maretha (Schopp) Campen. She is a 1944 graduate of John Burroughs High School and a 1948 graduate of Washington University, both in St. Louis. While attending Washington University, Marilyn met her husband, T. Nelson Magill. They were married May 26, 1950 in St. Louis. Nelson worked as an instructor at Washington University, until being hired by Shimer College to head up the Theatre Department in 1966, when they moved their family to Mt. Carroll. Marilyn loved Mt. Carroll. In 1979, she was elected to the City Council. During those years she organized the Mt. Carroll Young Person’s Theatre Group. Nelson passed away in 1988. Marilyn then decided she wanted to devote her time to the City of Mt. Carroll and was elected Mayor in 1989, she would go on to serve three terms. During her tenure as Mayor, she was very proud of the city services and the work ethic of our city workers and the police department. Marilyn was known as a good listener and someone who made a difference in people's lives. She offered a place above city hall for youth athletic teams to gather and socialize after home games called the "Fifth Quarter". Marilyn was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church.
Marilyn will be dearly missed by her two sons, Frank (Betty Ann) Magill of Richardson, Texas and Matt Magill of Mt. Carroll; three grandchildren, Shaun, Jennah and Madison; her sister, Marjorie Casterline of St. Louis; and several nieces and nephews. Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband, Nelson, and a sister, Maretha Smith.
