Marie Julia (Kilburg) Schmidt, age 87, of Bellevue, Iowa formerly of Preston, Iowa died Friday, April 9, 2010 at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue. A Funeral Mass celebrating Marie's life will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 12, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Preston with Father Paul Lippstock as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Preston with a meal to be served following the burial. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 11, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Preston with a scripture service being held at 4:00 p.m.
Marie was born on August 6, 1922 in rural Spragueville, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Rose (Michels) Kilburg. She married Edmund Schmidt on October 14, 1940 at St. Joseph's Preston, Iowa. Edmund died on July 1, 2008 in Bellevue.
Marie farmed outside of Springbrook with her husband and children until 1963 when the family moved to Preston. She was employed with her husband at Preston Community Schools and East Central Community Schools. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Preston Senior Citizens, Senior Citizens Corporate Board, St. Joseph's Building Committee, Card Club, and the Altar and Rosary Society. Marie loved God, her family, playing cards, and sports, especially the Chicago Cubs.
Survivors include her four children, Gary (Mary) Schmidt, Diane (Delbert) Miller, Leon (Sue) Schmidt all of Preston, and Beverly (Charles) Beauchamp of Maquoketa, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold (Joanne) Kilburg and Robert (Carol) Kilbursis; three sisters, Agnes McCarthy, Mildred Driscoll, and Rosemary (Ronald) Till: seven brothers in-law, Gerald (MaryAnn) Schmidt, Leonard (Shirley) Schmidt, Vitus Schmidt, Vincent (Anita) Schmidt, Levi (Vera) Schmidt, David (Audrey) Schmidt and Thomas (Chen Lee) Schmidt; six sisters in-law, Dorothy Zeimet, Kathryn Groves, Maryetta (Larry) Lampe, Patricia (Verlyn) Trenkamp, Charlene Grothues, and Alvara Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edmund; her parents, Peter & Rose; a son, Leroy; brothers Herb and Ray Kilburg; a sister, Katherine Bormann; one grandson and two great-granddaughters.
