Marie Eckelberg of Spragueville, Iowa was always in the kitchen cooking for her family and friends. She treasured family gatherings and cooking meals on the farm. She died at the age 90 on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Crestridge Care Center, Maquoketa, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, Iowa with Father Don Hertges as Celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Preston, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00, prior to the mass at the Church. Memorials may be given to Camp Courageous in Marie’s memory.
Marie was born on August 29, 1923, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Michel) Medinger in Springbrook, Iowa. She married Ives Eckelberg on her birthday, August 29, 1942 in Maquoketa. Ives died March 16, 2008. She spent her working years as a homemaker, as well as helping her husband on the farm in Spragueville. Marie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston. She enjoyed attending church, gardening, playing cards, bingo and she especially loved going dancing with her husband, Ives.
She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Judy (Robert) Andersen of Maquoketa; two grandchildren, Brenda (Dale) Heister, Maquoketa and Sherri (Aaron) Bailey of Greer, South Carolina; three great granddaughters, Linsey and Allison Heister and Hannah Bailey; two sisters, Audrey Schroeder and Evelyn (Allen) Reistroffer both of Camanche, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Vera Medinger of Maquoketa, Iowa.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ives; one son, Dennis; one granddaughter, Vickie Andersen; two brothers, Clarence and Alvin; and two sisters, Helen and Irene.
