Marianne Louise Schaffner (Birdie), age 77, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at her home in Freeport, Illinois. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established in Marianne’s memory.
Marianne was born on July 27, 1937, the daughter of Albert and Louise (Miller) Dentino in Peoria, Illinois. She attended Woodruff High School in Peoria, and graduated with the Class of 1955. She married Richard Schaffner on September 10, 1961 in Mossville, IL. Richard died on May 7, 2010.
Marianne spent much of her life as a mother, homemaker, and working alongside her husband on the farm. She also worked at the front desk for the Carrollton Inn, Mt. Carroll, IL, and as a Credit Specialist for Swiss Colony. Through her many jobs two of her favorite places to work were as an assistant librarian at the Chadwick, IL, library and as a sales clerk at the Runaway Unicorn in downtown Mt.Carroll. She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick, the Red Hat Society, and the General Federated Women’s Club of Illinois. Marianne enjoyed reading, puzzles and planting flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and playing Rummy and slot machines. Most of all, Marianne loved spending time with her family and friends.
Marianne will be dearly missed by her two sons, Michael (Carol) Schaffner of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Matthew (Roxanne) Schaffner of Mt. Carroll, Illinois; two daughters, Jananne (Steve Fritz) Schaffner of Freeport, and Jody (Mark) Swiech of Bristow, Virginia; eleven grandchildren, Daniel Prehn, Aimee Prehn, Travis Schaffner, Tyler Schaffner, Allison Prehn, Meredith Schaffner, Dylan Schaffner-Ivan, Cooper Schaffner-Ivan, Carly Kruse, Mj Schaffner, Lily Swiech; two great-grandchildren, Connor Shoemaker and Kinsley Kruse. Marianne is survived by one brother, Albert “Denny” (Judy) Dentino of Peoria. She is also survived by four sister-in-laws Bonnie Dentino, Jean Gauwitz, Norma McWilliams, Marge Dell, and one brother-in-law, Verne “Bun” Schaffner and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; one son, Martin Lee in 1991; two sisters, Geraldine Dentino and Connetta Guetersloh; one brother, Stephen Dentino, and her parents, Albert and Louise.
