Margaret Ann Root, age 88, of Thomson, IL, passed away August 25, 2024 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, in Savanna, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private interment will take place at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson.
Margaret was born March 8, 1936 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Sophia M. Grawe. She grew up in Thomson, graduating from Thomson Community High School with the class of 1954. On November 27, 1955, Margaret married Harry E. Root, Jr., in Savanna.
They made their home in Thomson, and Margaret went to work for National Lock, in Savanna, then later Drives, Inc. in Fulton, IL, until retiring. Family was always of the utmost importance to Margaret. One of the ways she showed her love to her family was through her baking. She loved to bake cookies and see the smiles as her loved ones enjoyed them.
In her younger years, Margaret helped in canning the vegetables grown in Harry’s garden, and enjoyed going on walks and bike rides. As she grew older and her children left the nest, she enjoyed the simple pleasure of a good tv show; oh, and her trips to Jewel-Osco! To Margaret, that was the crown jewel, and every other grocery chain was tied for last place.
Margaret will be remembered for her loving nature by her son, David (Andrea) Root, of Thomson; daughter, Donna Groenewald, of Morrison, IL; seven grandchildren, Randy (Tanya) Stricker, Billy Pauley, Karissa Root, Justin McGinnis, Micheal (Kylie) McGinnis, Autumn (Scottie) Kostka, and Ryan McGinnis; nine great-grandchildren, Natasha (Andrein), Tyler (Jessica), Ashley, Parker, Natalie, Camden, Audrey, Drew, and Nicholas; and four great-great-grandchildren, Marquise, Jameson, Jackson, and Beau; as well as numerous cousins and extended family. Margaret is preceded in death by her mother, Sophia; husband, Harry; and daughter, Linda Pauley.
