Mildred Charleen Floyd , age 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa, formerly of Savanna, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Clover Ridge Place, Maquoketa, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2013, at Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Savanna on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Burial will take place in the Savanna Township Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Charleen’s memory. Charleen was born in Benton, Wisconsin on February 2, 1926, the daughter of Clarence and Mable (Carter) Gray of rural Benton. She graduated from Benton High School and the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. She taught school in Benton before marrying William Floyd on December 27, 1947 in Dubuque, Iowa. Charleen continued her teaching career in Dubuque and then moved to Savanna with Bill in 1950. She taught first grade and kindergarten for the Chestnut Park School District and the Savanna Unit District until her retirement in 1984. Charleen enjoyed not only teaching, but also giving of her time to the church and civic organizations. In later years she loved spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with Bill.
Charleen is survived by one son, Bruce (Karilyn) Floyd of Delmar, Iowa; three grandchildren, BJ (Lynn) Floyd of Mackinaw, Illinois; Jennifer (Ricke) North of Plain City, Ohio and Julia (Chad) Williams of Chicago, Illinois; two step grandchildren, Chris (Bridget) Bowman of De Witt, Iowa and Ellen Dice of Alachua, Florida, and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Gwen Gill of Racine, Wisconsin and Lynn (Ray) Olson of Janesville, Wisconsin. Charleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Gretchen (Jack) Welsh and Ruth (Don) Cherry both of Janesville, Wisconsin.
