Lyla Hoyt, age 91, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away November 18, 2018 in Mt. Carroll, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private graveside memorial service will be held at Savanna Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Savanna Veterans Memorial, PO Box 72, Savanna, IL 61074.
Lyla was born May 24, 1927, in Fulton, Illinois, the daughter of Louis and Ethyl (Shaw) Mickelson. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1944. Lyla married Warren Hoyt Jr. on July 23, 1960. The two celebrated 12 years of marriage, until Warren’s passing in 1972.
Lyla spent her working years educating our youth as a school teacher in Thomson, Illinois, Savanna, Illinois, and San Diego, California. She served her communities in this fashion for 42 years, earning her Master’s in Education along the way. Lyla was an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time working in her garden. She also had an adventurous side as she loved to travel and collect antiques.
Lyla will be dearly missed by her daughters, Julie Broulik of Lisbon, Iowa, and Mary (James) Gough of Little Elm, Texas; 8 grandchildren; two brothers, Allan Mickelson of Golconda, Illinois, and Clarence (Carol) Flack of Clinton, Iowa; and sisters, Donna Flack of Savanna, Illinois, Pamela (Kenneth) Brown of Savanna, Illinois, and Denise (Del) Hamilton of Trenton, Illinois. Lyla is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Ethyl; husband Warren Hoyt, Jr.; brother, Gerald Mickelson; and son, Warren “Ted” Hoyt III.
