Lucille Hammond, age 90, of Preston, Iowa passed away Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Alverno Care Center, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2015 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Preston. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery, rural Sabula, Iowa. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. Memorials may be given in Lucille's memory to St. John's Lutheran Church, Preston, Iowa.
Lucille was born July 2, 1925 in Preston, the daughter of Cyrus and Elsie (Bruce) Miller. She grew up on the family farm near Miles, Iowa, and always remembered milking her cow "Sadie Bell" for the first time. Lucille went on to play the French horn in the Miles High School Band and graduated with the Class of 1943. On July 21, 1945, Lucille married Roy Hammond. They celebrated fifty-one years of marriage. Roy passed away in 1997.
Lucille was known as a superb baker and chef, she worked as the Head Cook at the Preston Schools for many years, often going in early in the morning to make cinnamon rolls from scratch. Most of all she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren. She also liked to read and collect cookbooks, and take rides in the country with Roy listening to music. Lucille was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for over fifty years and also the Women's Circle at the Church, the Preston Women's Club, and the Preston Legion Auxiliary.
Lucille will be dearly missed by five children, Garry (Marijane) Hammond of St. Joseph, Missouri, Richard Hammond of Bellingham, Washington, Ronald Hammond of Dubuque, Iowa, Marlyce (Michael) Horton of Clinton, Iowa and Marcia (Matt) Reiff of Preston; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Hammond, Amanda (Craig) Sparks, Eric (Candace) Horton, Kolby (Hailey) Reiff, Emily Reiff and Caroline Hammond; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Harlan Miller of Teeds Grove, Iowa; and a sister, Phyllis (Lester) Marshall of Miles. Lucille is preceded in death by her husband; both parents; a grandson, Cpl. Zachary Reiff USMC in 2011; two great grandsons, Noah Sparks and Maxwell Ruyle; and a sister, Dessel Rittmer.
