Lovelda L. Thielen was a loving woman, who cherished her family and community. She entered into heaven at the age 94 on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Eagle Point Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa with Reverend Robert Kreuger officiating. Burial will take place in Reeseville Cemetery, Green Island, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Lovelda was born December 21, 1919, the daughter of Ira and Anna (Mangler) Smith in Green Island, Iowa. She attended Bellevue High School. She married Otto Thielen on February 27, 1939 in Anamosa, Iowa. Otto died on November 11, 2000.
Lovelda worked in bookkeeping for 17 years for the Savanna Army Depot. She also held earlier bookkeeping jobs for her church and Collis Inc. She was the president of Sabula Senior Citizens for 12 years and was a member of the Rebecca Club and the Izaak Walton League. Lovelda was awarded the Governor’s Award for her years of volunteer work. She loved going to auctions and garage sales. She made jams and bread for everyone, and was known as the “Jam Lady.” She also loved picking berries, dancing and playing cards.
Lovelda will be dearly missed by her two daughters, La Fonda Simon of Langworthy, Iowa, and Nancy (Stanley) Von Thun of Andover, Iowa; four grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her parents Ira and Anna; one son-in-law, Edward Simon, and her brother, Albert.
