Loretta C. Schmidt Howard, age 94, of Preston, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Clover Ridge Retirement Community in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston, with a Vigil service to be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Preston. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Preston.
Loretta was born June 28, 1915, in Sugar Creek, Iowa, the daughter of William Jr. and Anna (Zeiser) Franzen. She attended Sugar Creek Catholic School. Loretta married Arthur W. Schmidt on November 11, 1933, at Sugar Creek Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1982. She later married Rupert Howard on June 13, 1986. He preceded her in death in 1996.
Loretta and Art farmed most of their married lives together North of Spragueville, Iowa. She later worked at the Sabula Speaker Factory and was an care taker for the elderly in the Preston area. Loretta enjoyed quilting, fishing, playing cards, and was a member of a Bunco Club, a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston, the Rosary Society, ACCW and Guild, and the Senior Citizens.
Loretta is survived and lovingly remembered by two daughters, Karen (Loren “Bill”) Kilburg of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Sharel (John A.) Kilburg of Bellevue, Iowa; five sons, Allan Schmidt of Spragueville, Iowa, Ardo (Jan) Schmidt of Preston, Iowa, Lyle (Pat) Schmidt of Spragueville, Eldon (Valerie) Schmidt Bellevue, and Leon (Deb) Schmidt of Chicago, Illinois; thirty seven grandchildren, fifty six great grandchildren, six great - great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, and one step great - great grandchild.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, Chris Shepard, Matilda Simmons, Alma Portz, Mary Schmidt, and Florence Holdgrapher; five brothers, Joe, John, August, Albert, and Adolph Franzen; and two granddaughters, Jolene and Mary Coral Schmidt.
