Lola Arlene Sterk age 94, of Savanna, Illinois died Monday, December 02, 2013 at Big Meadows in Savanna. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Burial will take place in St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Lola’s memory.
Lola was born November 20, 1919 to Charles Henry and Anna Marie (Steinhilber) Spittler in Stockton, Illinois. She attended and graduated from Stockton High School with the Class of 1937. After graduating from high school, Lola became Secretary to Superintendent of Schools in Stockton. In January of 1942 she went to work for the National Bank Stockton as an Assistant Cashier, and in October of 1942 she started employment at the Savanna Army Depot, retiring in June of 1971 after 29 years of service in the finance and purchasing department. On May 30, 1942 Lola married Dr. W. George Sterk in Stockton, Illinois. Dr. Sterk died January 10, 1999.
Lola was a member of the Savanna First United Methodist Church, Esther Circle United Methodist Women, charter member of NARFE, the Red Hat Society, and Chapter CE of the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1975.
Lola is survived by four nieces, Barbara (Bill) Skinder of Pueblo, Colorado, DeLite (William) Walls of Dixon, Illinois, Karen Spittler of Atlantic, Iowa, Kay (Mark) Young of Sterling, Illinois; two nephews Paul (Peggy) Drane of Stockton, Illinois, Mark (Cindy) Spittler of Freeport, Illinois; and a brother in-law, Kenneth Whipple of Pueblo. Lola is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. W. George Sterk; one brother, Charles (Alberta) Eugene Spittler and two sisters, Beatrice (Kenneth) Knight and Mildred (Earle) Drane.
