Lloyd Hartman

Lloyd Hartman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on October 25, 2024, after a courageous battle with an extended illness. He was 85 years old. Family, friends, and community members are invited to a celebration of life service on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Carroll Church of God. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Born on July 31, 1939, to Harold and Zella (Altensey) Hartman, Lloyd grew up on the family farm, where he first learned the values of hard work and dedication. He attended Mt. Carroll Elementary, Fairhaven Center, and later Chadwick High School. In his early twenties, Lloyd served his country with honor as a member of the Army Reserves National Guard from 1962 to 1966.

On January 1, 1964, Lloyd married Barbara LaBorde, with whom he raised three children during their 27 years together. Later, on July 31, 2003, Lloyd married Colleen Davis, and together they enjoyed over two decades of companionship, relocating to Arizona and making new memories in the sunshine and warmth.

A devoted and hardworking man, Lloyd made his career in trucking. Though he primarily worked as a truck driver, his heart always belonged to farming. After working as a farmhand in Milledgeville, Lloyd moved his young family to Lanark, where he began hauling milk and cattle. Later the Hartmans moved to Brodhead, WI, and Lloyd began hauling freight for Schneider Transport—a job that often turned into memorable family “mini vacations” as he brought them along on long hauls. He worked for Schneider trucking for 30 years. Known to many by his CB radio handle, "Snowbird," Lloyd relished conversations with other drivers and friends over the airwaves.

Lloyd’s interests were as dynamic as his life. He had a lifelong passion for classic cars and motorcycles, earning him the nickname “Cool Cat” in the local community. In his youth, he participated in drag racing and, true to his nature, enjoyed driving fast throughout his life. Lloyd delighted in attending county fairs and watching tractor pulls & demolition derbys, and he often filled his home with the sounds of classic country music, playing songs on his guitar and harmonica. He was also a longstanding member of the Moose Club in Janesville, WI, where he enjoyed weekly fish frys and cherished friendships.

A man of deep faith and quiet strength, Lloyd was a lifelong member of the Mt. Carroll Church of God, instilling a love of the Lord in his children. Gentle and kind-hearted, he was a “gentle giant” who touched many lives with his unwavering patience and steadfast love. Above all, Lloyd was a family man; he never forgot a grandchild’s birthday and found joy in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family remembers him as a man who was “indestructible,” fighting life’s challenges with resilience and fortitude.

Lloyd is survived by his children, Sharon Marie Hartman of Brodhead, WI, Tim Hartman of South Wayne, WI, and Millie (Doug) Rodenkirch of New Lisbon, WI; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Betty Geesey, Mary Boelkens, and Elizabeth Hartman, all of Mt. Carroll and his wife, Colleen Hartman of Oro Valley, AZ. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews and several friends. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Barbara Johnson, and three brothers-in-law, Leo Frederick, John Boelkens, and Ralph Geesey.

Lloyd Hartman’s legacy of kindness, strength, and family devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
