Llewellyn “Lew” Dennison passed away September 10, 2023, at his daughters home in Mt. Carroll, IL with family by his side. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Law Jones Funeral Home, in Savanna, IL, at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, in Sabula, IA.
Lew was born August 30, 1927, in Savanna, to William and Muriel (Hatfield) Dennison. He graduated from Sabula Public Schools in 1945. He would soon enlist in the United States Army, serving for 11 months in 1946, and again from December 1951 to December 1953, spending 19 months in Alaska.
He farmed for several years and retired from the Savanna Army Depot in 1972. But his favorite work was always refinishing furniture. He did this for over 35 years. It began when he started buying and refinishing furniture to sell to the military personnel stationed at the Depot. He quickly developed his skill and later opened an antique shop where he continued his business.
Lew married Claudia Russell in 1964, and together they had one daughter, to go along with her three children who Lew helped raise. They divorced in 1972, and Lew then married Lorene Welch in 1974, who sadly passed away in 2005. He then married Dorothy Hoyer in 2006, spending the next 9 years together until her passing in 2015.
Lew was a lover of horses and broke a few in his day! He also had his grandkids break a few more. He was a simple man who enjoyed watching his Cubs and Packers, and loved his family dearly, especially his grandkids. He was the type of man who always believed someone else needed “it” more than he did and it showed in his kind and generous ways.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Norris) Hartman, of Mt. Carroll; three grandchildren, Jerritt (KateLynn) of Clinton, IA, Mathew (Allyson) of Fulton, IL, and Jacob of Ames, IA; four great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Kinley, Hudson, and Rylie; nine step-children and several step-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three wives.
