Lester Alfred Marshall

Lester A. Marshall of Clover Ridge Place assisted living facility in Maquoketa, IA., formerly of Miles, IA., passed away at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, IA. on May 10, 2026.

Lester was born on September 22, 1932 in Sabula, IA to Alfred and Hazel (Henfrey) Marshall. He attended the country school near his home (Sabula). He was baptized and confirmed on November 2, 1958 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. Lester married Helen Catherine "Kate" McMillan in December 1953. Into that union were born 2 sons, Kent and Dan Marshall. Lester and Kate later divorced. Lester was remarried on July 2, 1980 to Phyllis Miller-Eggers.

Lester proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Lester farmed with his dad throughout his life, and worked for the Highway Commission among various other jobs. His final job was working for the Elizabeth Garage in Elizabeth, IL, which he greatly enjoyed due to his love for automobiles, most especially Buicks.

Lester found much enjoyment in his pet dogs, especially Brutus and Old Pup. He loved visiting with people and never knew a stranger. In his later years he and Phyllis very much enjoyed reuniting with his Army buddies annually in Branson, MO. He also enjoyed being outdoors on the farm, country music, and dancing. Above all, he adored his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A favorite pastime with grandchildren was having Geno's pizza and ice cream at the dinner table.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Phyllis of Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa; sons, Kent (Sharon) Marshall, of Sabula and Dan (Paula Blake) Marshall, of Mountain View, AR; stepdaughters, Carla Wilson of Miles, IA and Sandy (Dennis) Witt of Charlotte, IA; grandchildren, Sarah (Jon) Hartman of Savanna, IL, Adam (Melissa) Marshall, of Onida, SD, and Eric (Kelly) Marshall of Falls Church, VA; step-grandchildren, Angie (Bob) Richards of Austin, MN, Ken (Kelly Stuart) Wilson of Miles, IA, Trisha (Cameron) Costello of Charlotte, IA, and Derek (Rachel Joens) Witt of Eldridge, IA; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Lester is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glen and Wayne Marshall; stepson, Kenneth Eggers; step son-in-law Seth Wilson; and multiple aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life service honoring Lester will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, IA. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula, IA. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Law Jones Funeral Home in Preston, IA, as well as one hour prior to Saturday’s service, at the church.

The family requests casual attire (blue jeans). Memorials may be directed to the family. A memorial fund has been established. The family wishes to offer a special thank you to Clover Ridge Place staff, Hospice of Jackson County, and Jackson County Regional Health Center, for the excellent loving care provided to Lester and his family during this difficult time.
