Lester Dierks

Lester Peter Dierks, 77, of Preston, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston. Burial will be in Van Buren Cemetery, rural Preston, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston.
Lester was born on July 14, 1939, the son of Peter and Lucinda (Bott) Dierks in Clinton, Iowa. He graduated with Preston High School, Class of 1957. He married Patricia Merema on April 19, 1974 in Trinity Reformed Church, Fulton, Illinois.
Lester lived and farmed his entire life on the family farm. He raised corn, cattle, hogs, chickens and sheep. He also worked at Plum River Golf Course as a "greens keeper". Les eventually retired and resorted to tinkering on the farm. Lester was a member of St. John Evangelical Church, Preston where he previously served on the church council. He was a member of the Preston Gun Club, taught hunter safety for over 50 years and was a lifelong member of the NRA. He loved his annual deer hunt with the "guys". Lester loved flying, a love he shared with his son. Les also enjoyed traveling, especially on their annual family fishing trip to Henning, MN. Most of all Les treasured spending time with his family and friends.
Lester will be dearly missed by his wife, Pat of Preston; one son, Greg (Julie) Dierks of Claremore, Oklahoma; one daughter, Angie (Tom Heath) Dierks of Clinton, Iowa; two grandsons, Jackson and Grayson Dierks of Claremore, Oklahoma; and one sister, Phyllis Bratthauer of Bryant, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Hope Kay Dierks; one brother, Glen P. Dierks; and one brother in-law, Harris Bratthauer.
