Leon E. “Joe” Johnson, age 60, of Savanna, Illinois formerly of Sabula, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at his home. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa with Reverend Robert Krueger officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula at a later date. A memorial gathering will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Joe’s memory. Joe was born on July 2, 1949, the son of Julius E. and Margaret M. “Mickey” (Patterson) Johnson in Savanna. He attended Sabula High School and graduated with the Class of 1967. After graduation, Joe served his country in the United States Navy from 1972-1976. Joe married Sue Smith in 1969 and later married Patricia “Patty” Gerloff on March 17, 1984 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Joe and Patty were later divorced, but were reunited and married again on September 14, 2009.Joe was employed at DuPont in Clinton, Iowa for thirteen years. He moved to Arizona in 1981. In 1984, Joe began working in maintenance for the United States Postal Service and transferred to Waterloo, Iowa in 2008, retiring soon after in 2009. He was a member of the Sabula American Legion and Handyman U.S.A. Joe loved spending time golfing with his brothers and his best buddy, Steve. He also enjoyed woodworking and cherished spending time with his family and friends.Joe will be missed by his wife, Patty of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sons, Jason (Joy) Johnson of Preston, Iowa and Kevin (Ruth Kramer) Johnson of Scottsdale; one daughter, LeAnn Johnson of Scottsdale; two granddaughters, Jayden and Jennessa; three brothers, Bill (Cindy) Johnson, Jim (Pam) Johnson, John (Lynn) Johnson, all of Sabula; one sister, Jerry (Dave) Wise of Sabula; five nieces and two nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
