Leland G. Schmaling, age 84 of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died Monday, April 19, 2010, at FHN Hospital, Freeport, Illinois with his daughter by his side. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church with Reverend Mark Harkness officiating. Burial will take place in Upper York Cemetery, Argo Fay, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 12:noon –2:00 p.m., Thursday prior to the service at the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church in Leland’s honor.
Leland was born on July 22, 1925, in Clinton, Iowa the son of George and Ruby (Kneale) Schmaling. He attended the University Of Illinois in Agriculture. Leland farmed for many years near Mt. Carroll. He was married to Mary (Mc Combie) Colehour. Leland was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church.
Leland was a great “Dad” and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, taking car rides and being a member of his Church.
Leland will be dearly missed by his daughter, Melissa Coverdill of Savanna, Illinois; his son, Steven Schmaling and Diane Speaker of Mt. Carroll; and four grandsons, Devin, Eric, Jared and Noah; and four step-children, Mary Jane Jacobs of Savanna, Michael (Molly) Colehour, Patricia (Jeff) Jannsen and Jon Colehour, all of Phoenix Arizona. Leland is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Esther J. Schmaling.
